The Rusted Musket

Featuring the political intrigue and hardy thoughts of our contributing writers

I watched a short 4 minute video on liberty and Tocqueville by this social commentary guy Klavan something or other, click here to check it out.  It’s basically about politics and freedom but the part I want to highlight is half way through the video where he correctly informs the viewer that the State has picked up taking care of orphans, widows, and those in need.  That’s a no brainer to us generation X’s and above because that’s the way it’s always been but did you know that in the past more flexible and free institutions such as charitable organizations and churches used to provide and run such programs.?  I starting thinking how the church responded to this off loading of responsibility and freeing up of income.  Churches nowadays don’t need to build orphanages or halfway homes because the government does but that doesn’t mean churches have run out of things to build, nope, they continue to build buildings with state of the art sound systems, lights, and lasers thus making their Christmas/Easter specials look awesome.  I ponder what could happen if every church built some sort of care/halfway/education wing because I think it is still the mandate of the church to take care of those in need…
